Most people change jobs throughout their lives and often pay into several different employers’ or personal pension schemes. It’s easy to lose track of the funds you have paid into, especially if you were only in a particular job for a short time. These lost or missing pension funds could be worth thousands of pounds – and could make a real difference to the quality of your retirement.

Did you opt out of SERPS?

If you were working between 1987 and 2002, you may also have opted out of SERPS (State Earnings Related Pension Scheme). If you did, you may well have some pension provision that you’re not aware of. These payments will have been made (and still may be paid) directly from your National Insurance contributions, so you may not know about them. It’s possible you could have accumulated quite a substantial fund.
